Flashrouters is solid, especially if you want a lot of options for VPNs. Their setup guides are pretty good. I haven't tried Sabai though.

I went with Flashrouters because they had more router choices. Sabai felt a bit more limited in hardware, from what I saw. The support from Flashrouters was helpful when I had a dumb question about OpenVPN vs WireGuard.

i'm looking at the Netgear Nighthawk and it says it's pre-configured. Does that mean the VPN subscription is included, or do I still need to get one myself?

Nah, the VPN subscription is separate. They just set up the router so it's ready to use with your VPN service.

You gotta get your own VPN sub. They flash the firmware so it's compatible with like, tons of VPN providers, but the actual service is on you. Makes sense, you wouldn't want them picking your VPN for you anyway.

I heard if it's flashed hardware there might be a restocking fee or something? Not 100% sure, but probably worth checking their official policy on that. For unopened stuff it's usually easier.
